18,000 people will lose their jobs as Amazon cuts costs

As many as 18,000 people would lose their jobs globally as Amazon battles to cut costs.

The organization's chief executive, Andy Jassy, ​​made the announcement in a recent memo to staff.

He said the announcement was brought forward because one of the company's employees leaked the discounts to the outside.

According to him, the "uncertain economy" of the cuts was based on his "quick hiring" over several years.

The online giant, which employs 1.5 million people globally, did not specify which countries the job cuts would affect, but said they would include Europe.

Most of the job losses will come from its retail business and human resources division.

"We do not take these decisions lightly or underestimate how they could affect the lives of those affected.

"Companies that last long go through different phases. They're not in heavy people expansion mode every year," he revealed.
