2023: Accord will make history in Oyo — Adelabu

The Accord Party's gubernatorial candidate in Oyo State, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, has said the party will create surprises and make history in the 2023 general election.

Adelabu gave the explanation during a radio show called "Political Circuit" monitored in Ibadan on Saturday.

Adelabu, a former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), was the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial candidate in the 2019 general election in the state.

He had defected from the APC to the Accord party where he won the gubernatorial ticket, after alleged irregularities in the APC primary election.

The gubernatorial candidate said the Accord was not a third, but a primary force in the state's 2023 general election.

Adelabu said forces such as the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), the Labor Party (LP) and the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) had in the past won elections in Anambra, Ondo and Nassarawa respectively.

The gubernatorial candidate said that the circumstances in Oyo State at present are even more positive than in the aforementioned three states, where the parties have grown organically.

He said former governor Rashidi Ladoja expressed his joy when he informed him that he was ready to pursue his ambition as governor in the Accord by 2023.

Adelabu said that years ago Ladoja contested the governorship on the Accord platform with a huge following, despite coming second in the election.

“I went to tell Baba Ladoja that I am going to the Accord to pursue my governorship ambition. He was so happy that he will witness the first governor on the Accord platform in the state .

"He was thrilled because he stands for Accord in Oyo State. This is because he challenged on Accord platform and got almost 300,000 votes.

"Why won't he be happy? He was very happy and very supportive. He knew I was coming to Accord to supplement the existing Accord structure with my over 300,000 votes that had in 2019,” he said.

He said his group moved to Accord to complement its existing structure, saying Accord was a container with content matching 80% of APC members in the state.

The gubernatorial candidate said Accord's nominees were largely drawn from the APC with their huge following.

"I can tell you with authority, and it remains to be proven otherwise, that 70-80% of APC members follow us to Accord," he said.

Adelabu said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was also divided, saying several groups have withdrawn from the party while some wait for the final whistle.

He did not rule out a possible collaboration when they have an agreement on morals, values and ideologies, adding that there is no such thing now.
