9 people who stood up to Roy Keane: Klopp, Schmeichel and more

Despite being one of the most terrifying men in football, there are a few brave people who have dared to take on Roy Keane over the years.

The former Manchester United captain was never afraid to voice his opinions, inevitably upsetting a few players and managers in the process.

We looked at nine people who stood up to Keane and tried to put him in his place.

Jurgen Klopp

After watching Liverpool beat Arsenal 3-1 in 2020, Keane claimed the Reds were 'sloppy' at times in the game.

Klopp heard some of the analysis and was clearly upset by the remark, insisting it was a perfect performance on his part.

"Did I hear that Mr. Keane said we had a sloppy performance tonight because I could already hear you? He said that? Klopp asked.

"Was a sloppy performance tonight? Maybe he was talking about another game. It can't be that game, sorry. That's an incredible description. It was absolutely exceptional. Nothing was sloppy, absolutely nothing."

The Sky Sports pundit looked stunned to be dragged into a debate and tried to clarify his comments.

Water seems to have passed under the bridge since then, and the couple laughed it off recently when they came face to face at Old Trafford.

Jon Walters

It's fair to say that Walters and Keane aren't on each other's Christmas card lists.

There is a long-standing feud between the couple and they almost came to blows when Walters tried to leave Ipswich Town in 2010.

"We fought. It's childish, 10 years ago, it's not me now," Walters JOE said in 2019. "But because I don't like bullies, the way it went, I would stand up to them.

"So I was like, 'Come on, let's go, let's have a fight. If you want to go, let's go, hit me, hit me.' He went, "You hit me" and we went back and forth. (I said) you bully everyone in the club, you bully the staff and the players, but I'm not afraid of you, let's go me and you.' /p>

"So we had a fight, 'Hit me, you hit me' and then it wasn't happening, so I walked out of the room. As I was leaving, he said something very personal, something that has nothing to do with him, but it touched me. So I closed the door behind me and went inside.

"I basically said that - 'This has nothing to do with you, come on, let's go. Hit me first and see what happens to you, just give me a chance, I'm going to rip your head off' - that's what I was basically telling him."

Walters made the decision days after the row, joining Stoke City in a £2.75million deal.

Pablo Counago

While we talk about former Ipswich Town strikers…

Keane berated Counago after a poor performance for the reserves and was stunned when the striker decided to defend.

"I went down to the locker room after the game and tried it," Keane said in his 2014 autobiography. "He said, 'Well, how are we going to win anything with you as a manager?" I almost attacked him physically, but I didn't."

After learning he had been heavily criticized in Keane's book, Counago hit back at his former Blues boss for the second time.

"It's a very sad end for a person who was so great as a player. As I told him once, I think he's a complete mess as a football manager," said Counago at Ipswich's TWTD website.

"As he said in his book, he wanted to hit me, but behind his appearance there is a coward. I just hope he can find happiness in his life because, in my opinion, being so miserable must be mentally exhausting."

Pierre Schmeichel

Despite their incredible success on the pitch, Keane and Schmeichel didn't always get on well during their time together at Old Trafford.

"I had a meltdown with Peter on a pre-season tour of Asia in 1998, right after I returned from my Crusader injury," Keane said in his 2014 autobiography. that we were in Hong Kong. There was drink involved.

"There had been a bit of tension between us over the years, for football reasons. Peter would come out yelling at the players, and sometimes I felt like he was toying with the crowd:" Look at me!"

"He was probably doing it for levels of concentration, but I felt like he was doing it too often, like he was saying to the crowd, 'Look what I have to deal with.'

"He said, 'I've had enough of you, it's...
