'A new low' - How the world reacted to Manchester United's 4-0 loss to Brentford

Manchester United suffered even more humiliation as Brentford stunned the footballing world with a deserved 4-0 victory over the Red Devils.

While United have produced some truly poor performances over the past 12 months, no one expected Brentford to score four goals in the first half.

We looked at how players, experts and people on social media reacted to the result.

Erik ten Hag

"It's difficult for me," he said after the game. "It's always a surprise when you start a game like this.

"After 35 minutes we conceded four goals. It's not possible. The team have to take responsibility, I'm really sorry for the fans who did everything to support us, we let them down. "

David de Gea

"I think I cost my team three points," said the keeper. "It was a bad performance from me. After the mistake and the second, it was very hard for the team.

"It was a horrible day. Of course, we should react better, but I should have saved the first blow, and the result would probably be different."

Gary Neville

– "We are seeing the annihilation of Manchester United," Neville said on Sky Sports.

"I thought United would do better, but they've been mauled, bullied, disturbed like you wouldn't believe, and there's nowhere to hide.

"I've watched United for 42 years and can't think of a time when I thought things got that bad in the first half."

– "Manchester United, these players have proven under three different managers that they don't work as hard as the teams they play against," he added. "How long have we been saying that hard work trumps talent when talent works hard.

"This Man Utd team don't run hard enough, they don't run fast enough, but they're drained of confidence. They're fighting badly and they've been for 12 months. They're not being helped and maybe- be that someone would say they don't deserve help.

"I've been on struggling teams and you can see they're hurting and they need something and it has to come from the top. But today was a new low - and it looks like Man Utd may continually top their previous lows. When is the low going to come because the reality is it's really, really bad."

Rio Ferdinand

–"It was unbelievable. I just don't understand. I can't put into words. We're just the butt of all the jokes now," he told FIVE.

"We've become an absolute laughing stock. There aren't even any teams underneath that I can joke with. I'm ridiculed by Brighton fans, Brentford fans are going to be added to the list now.

"It's constant. You watch the game today and the players are nowhere near worth the money they spent on them. They're nowhere near worth what they're probably paying them There is no trust in the building.

"You look at it and say it's not the Manchester United I once knew. Although there's a little disgrace, but so far? It's even beyond digging up individual players, that's just the way it is. It's crazy, we're not even playing against the top tier of the league."

– "I'm not really sorry for the players, I'm sorry for Ten Hag," he added. “He came under false pretenses. He was waiting for new recruits. People complain about Cristiano Ronaldo, but he's also waiting for new signings.

"Ten Hag is probably thinking 'I was sold a dummy here, I didn't know I was getting into this'. The players aren't of the required level - it's as simple as that. The results are telling us. And it's not just the results over a month or two, it's over a long period of time now."

Jamie Redknapp

"It's not just good enough by any stretch of the imagination because you can't always play well, but you can always run," Redknapp said after looking at the distance stats.< /p>

"It's so overwhelming for this Manchester United team. I don't care who the manager is, I don't care who the owners are. It has nothing to do with it, it's running for the jersey, it's a shame from their point of view."

He added: "He [Ten Hag] made some mistakes, but of the players who started and finished that game, I don't think I've ever seen a more abject performance from a club that I would consider the 'one of the largest in the world.'
