Abia Governorate: Labour's Otti leads in 10 of 17 LGAs

The Labor Party (LP) gubernatorial candidate in Abia State, Alex Otti, is in the lead after the compilation of the results of Saturday's gubernatorial election in 16 of the 17 local government areas of the State.

PREMIUM TIMES had reported that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) suspended the collection of election results for the governorship of Obingwa Local Government Area of the state following an alleged attack and the invasion of his office in the council area by suspected thugs.

Based on the results announced so far, the race for state governor is between the LP and the PDP, the ruling party in the state.

However, the LP's Mr Otti leads by a wide margin after winning 10 of the 16 local government areas so far announced by state returning officer Nnenna Oti.

His closest challenger and People's Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Okey Ahiwe won in five local government areas, while Young Progressive Party (YPP) election candidate Enyinnaya Nwafor won in a local government area.

After tabulating results from all 16 council areas, Mr. Otti leads with 172,246 votes, while PDP's Mr. Ahiwe got a total of 78,628 votes to come in far behind.

The margin difference between the LP and PDP candidates is 93,618 votes.

The 10 council areas where the LP candidate won are: Abia North, Abia South, Arochukwu, Bende, Ikwuano, Isuikwuato, Ohafia, Umuahia North, Umuahia South and Umunneochi.

The PDP candidate, for his part, won in the following five constituencies: Isiala-Ngwa South, Ukwa East, Ukwa West, Ugwunagbo and Isiala-Ngwa North, where he is from.

YPP candidate Mr Nwafor only won in Osisoma LGA where he is from.

While the INEC is currently reviewing the outcome of the Obingwa Local Government Area gubernatorial elections, the PDP faces a daunting challenge: it must win around 94,000 voters without the Labor Party won't get an extra vote.
