Ebonyi PDP suspends VP, legal counsel and others

*Orders the arrest of the chairman of a factional group and others for an alleged amount of 50 million naira

Ebonyi State People's Democratic Party, led by Mr. Tochukwu Okorie, has suspended the party's legal adviser in the state, Mudi Erhebede; the vice-president, Ifeanyi Nworie; Publicity Secretary, Chika Nwoba; and Youth Leader Obinna Iteshi.

It was then that the PDP ordered the immediate arrest of the chairman of a group of party factions, Silas Onu, for allegedly and fraudulently embezzling more than 52 million naira from the party account in collusion with a banker of Access Bank Plc, Abakaliki Branch.

The president, Okorie, said this during a press conference at the party secretariat located at Abakaliki/Enugu highway, Abakaliki, the state capital, on Tuesday.

“We have evidence of how Silas Onu fraudulently withdrew more than 50 million naira from the party's Access Bank account. arrest of Silas Onu and those with whom he shared the money.

"They split it 10 million naira each between them. They did it and turned around to allege the opposite against us. It's open theft and we won't take it," said declared Okorie.

He continued, "The SEC received a memo ratifying the suspension of certain individuals. The memo was based on the decision of the State Labor Committee following a petition filed by a certain Okuri Eze Reuben of Akaezeukwu district against the following persons: Barr. Ifeanyi Nworie; Mr. Nwoba Chika Nwoba; Barré. Mudiaga Erhenede; and Barr. Obinna Iteshi.

"The above individuals are charged with offenses as described in Section 58(1) of the 2017 PDP constitution as amended. The petitioner had also attached a sworn statement in support of his petition. The SEC has unanimously approved and ratified the suspension for the one-month period as set forth in the memo.

For the avoidance of doubt, Barr. Ifeanyi Nworie, Mr. Nwoba Chika Nwoba, Barr. Mudiaga Erhenede and Barr. Obinna Iteshi has been suspended from the party for a period of one month from July 4, 2022, in accordance with the applicable provisions of the PDP Constitution.

"As a result, the suspended members are barred from all party activity during the period of suspension. They have also been referred to the State Disciplinary Committee for a further hearing on the motion. They are advised to the advisability of the meetings of the Disciplinary Committee to defend themselves in accordance with the rules of a fair trial. In the meantime, all documents and property of the party in their possession must be returned no later than Friday July 8, 2022.

"Allegations of financial impropriety against any person are defamatory and I have informed my attorneys accordingly. The matter is already before the court."

The PUNCH reported that on May 23, 2022, the Abuja Court of Appeal ordered the reinstatement of Okorie as Chairman of the PDP in Ebonyi State and sacked Silas Onu, who was previously the occupant of the post.
