Acne Studios Men Fall 2023

Jonny Johansson is no stranger to gender bending, but with war and football at headlines, he felt the time had come to revisit male stereotypes. His fall collection for Acne Studios was a send-off of the ultimate man: the caveman.

The designer chose the theme as a tongue-in-cheek take on toxic masculinity.

"What's so interesting now with young men is that they don't have not that baggage, what I carry," he said. "Last season when we had the cast, all the boys came with a purse, and all the girls came with a skateboard. It's something that's been going on for a while, but now these young people are living it, it's not just a fad."

He may feel weighed down by the weight of conventional wisdom, but you can never accuse Johansson of thinking inside the box. His caveman looked like a cross between a wrestler and Britney Spears.

Dirty jeans, oversized jackets and patchwork checks contrasted with corsets and spiral lace-up pants, while than lacy underwear peeked through the waistband of black biker pants or baggy pinstripe pants.

Tie-dyed, washed and bleached fabrics echoed the mineral textures of cave walls, while cozy shirts were worn with knee socks, in an ironic version of football's hold on the male psyche.

"I don't feel comfortable with a man who acts like a 'real man' , but I feel very comfortable with the aesthetic," Johansson said. "It's something that feels like home."

He explained that a cropped T-shirt emblazoned with the name "Greta" was a fun reference to his reputation as a recluse, which prompted friends to compare him to silent film star Greta Garbo.

But in light of recent events, this could read as a sign of support for Greta Thunberg, the climate activist who set Twitter on fire with her caustic responses to the taunts of misogynistic TikTok star Andrew Tate, who was later arrested by Romanian authorities in connection with an investigation into human trafficking and the rape.

Johansson has known Thunberg since she was little in the same daycare as her son. “I could never have imagined at daycare that she would be what she is,” he marvels.

Without a doubt, his teenager could not have imagined a future where the boys were free either to wear high-heeled shoes and bra tops. With this freewheeling collection, pushing those limits just got a little more fun.
