Adebutu and others indicted for alleged vote buying

The federal government on Monday indicted the People's Democratic Party candidate for the 2023 gubernatorial elections in Ogun State, Ladi Adebutu, in absentia, for alleged vote buying.

Our correspondent has learned that the All Progressives Congress, through its Ogun State Chairman, Yemi Sanusi, has written a petition to the Inspector General of Police regarding the allegation.

The allegation was reportedly investigated by the Eleweran State Criminal Investigation Department, Abeokuta.

According to the indictment in the case without AB/10C/2003 filed with the High Court and dated June 2, 2023, Adebutu, together with Messrs. Ogunbona Hammed, Tiamiyu Waliu, Egunsola Owolabi, Sanni Adegoke, Hon. Dare Lukman Ogunleye, Dayo Fasina, Wasiu Enilolobo and Malik Badmus, were prosecuted on four counts, namely one count of criminal association contrary to section 121 of the electoral law of 2022, corruption contrary to the Section 121 of the Elections Act, 2022, and two counts of undue influence contrary to Section 127 of the Elections Act, 2022.

According to the details of the offense, Adebutu and the co-defendants "on or about March 18 at Ibara, in the jurisdiction of this Honorable Court, conspired between you to corruptly offer gifts in the form of prepaid cards verve who had inscribed on it "Dame Caroline Oladuni Adebutu Memorial Endorsement Scheme for Less Privileged" to entice voters to attempt the return of PDP candidates in the gubernatorial and state assembly elections in the Ogun State."

Adebutu was further accused of providing 200,000 pre-paid Verve cards loaded with 10,000 naira each and bearing the same name "for the purpose of corruptly influencing voters to vote for PDP candidates" during of the said elections.

At Monday's hearing, Adebutu was absent while five defendants; Ogunbona Hammed, Tiamiyi Waleed, Egunsola Owolabi, Sanni Adejoke and Malik were present.

They all pleaded not guilty to all four counts and their attorney Muyiwa Obanewa later urged the court to grant bail to the defendants.

Judge Abiodun Akinyemi later admitted the defendant to post bail in the amount of N100,000 and bail each, who will be either slaves or relatives of the defendants with proof of payment of bail. tax.

The court adjourned the case until September 26, 2023 for a final hearing.
