Adidas collaborates with Thebe Magugu on a range of inclusive sportswear

COME TOGETHER: Adidas has teamed up with South African designer Thebe Magugu on an inclusive sports range featuring high-performance tennis pieces that will be worn on the court by leading players Stefanos Tsitsipas, Felix Auger Aliassime and Daria Kasatkina, as well as champion wheelchair tennis player Dana Mathewson, in key tournaments this summer.

The capsule collection - available Monday for members of German sportswear manufacturer AdiClub's rewards program, and August 15 worldwide - also includes modest swimsuits, size-inclusive in sizes XL to 4XL and neutral pieces.

Each performance piece in the collection combines high-tech fabrics with recycled materials, as part of the company's ongoing efforts to become more sustainable.

The line, which is split into two versions, covers multiple sports, including running, swimming, training, tennis, soccer and cycling, as well as a casual wear set, and celebrates "the community, heritage and identity, inspired by Southern African designer education,” Adidas said in a statement on Monday.

Magugu has revisited iconic footwear styles from Adidas, including the Stan Smith, Astir and Originals NMD sneakers.

The creator has teamed up with his usual collaborator, the artist Phathu Nembilwi, on a work representing a dancing woman, influenced by her mother, her aunt and her grandmother, who were the main muses of her eponymous ready-to-wear line, including its spring 2022 collection, which is inspired by family photographs.

“I am endlessly inspired by the energy of the women in my life and the heritage of my homeland. Bringing these personal stories together through design and blending them with the iconic performance and lifestyle pieces of 'Adidas has been an amazing process,' said Magugu.

“The collection truly celebrates all of the positive influences around me and a sense of community that is so important to me. I hope it inspires the same sense of joy in those who wear it,” a- he added.

Her three-piece swim hijab set is made in part with recycled materials and a lightweight, chlorine-resistant fabric. Gender-neutral pieces were designed with Unitefit, a fit system created with a range of sizes, genders and shapes in mind.
