Akintoye resigns from the head of the Yoruba Nation group

The leader of a Yoruba self-determination agitation group, Banji Akintoye, has resigned from his post.

Mr. Akintoye, a history professor and senator during the Second Republic, handed over the post to his deputy, Wale Adeniran.

The group, Ilana Omo Oodua, advocates for an independent Yoruba nation.

Recently, an internal crisis led its spokesperson, Maxwell Adeleye, and Mr. Adeniran to announce their resignation from the group.

However, Mr Adeleye told PREMIUM TIMES that their resignation letters had been rejected by the group's management.

But in a letter dated December 5, Mr Akinleye said he was resigning because of his advanced age and weakened body.

The general secretary of the group, Tunde Amusat, shared the contents of the letter with our journalist on Thursday.

“Dear Wale, I am writing this letter to you in your capacity as President of Ilana Omo Oduduwa to congratulate you and the new Executive Board of Ilana,” the letter reads.

“I also inform Ilana through you of my departure from my new responsibilities at Ilana. he said.

He said the duties awaiting him as group president were too "heavy" for his age.

"As you know better than anyone, I have been seeking for more than a year to take leave of Ilana because combining Ilana's duties with the duties of the very high demands of the struggle for self-determination has been too heavy for me at my age,” added the former president.

"I am very honored that you, as the person closest to me at Ilana, most Ilana members and all Ilana committees, have been urging me for months not to leave Ilana because , according to all of you, Ilana is my special 'baby' in the whole struggle for self-determination. But you will recall that at a special meeting of the leaders of the struggle for self-determination from around the world about a month ago , you and all other participants in the meeting have graciously agreed that I should relinquish my duties at Ilana due to my heavy accumulation of duties at the higher levels of the entire struggle.

“Regarding our current difficulties in Ilana, I am sure you would testify that I am not leaving because of them, and that in general, even the greatest difficulties never cause me to give up. I am imbued with a God-given confidence that I can endure anything and work through the most torturous complications among men, because God in His mercy has given me the gift of a heart that loves all people in all situations.

“Still, I must ask your forgiveness for leaving you Ilana in her current state. I had wanted to leave Ilana immediately after the special meeting of world leaders about a month ago, but I decided to help you iron out some of the ongoing difficulties before you leave. Unfortunately, things have not improved as quickly as expected, and you are now faced with a situation where some of our extremists are making the difficulties even worse. However, I I have great faith in you, especially that you will find ways to bring our Ilana back to the path of compromise, unity and strength.
