Alexis Stone turned into Jean Paul Gaultier for Campaign

DOUBLE TAKE: If you think Jean Paul Gaultier popped up on a Paris street holding a baguette in the latest brand's ready-to-wear campaign, watch again.

It was actually British drag performer and makeup artist Alexis Stone who donned the looks of the “Dress Like Jean Paul” spring collection, inspired by the Breton top, also known as the marinière, and the French designer's kilt.

Revealed on Instagram on Wednesday, the images were taken by London photographer Grant-James Thomas in Paris' Les Halles district.

In one image, Stone-as-Gaultier wore a kilt and sailor ensemble nodding to one of the French couturier's best-known portraits, an image taken in 1994 by photographer Jean-Marie Périer for the French edition of Elle which saw him don this striped top and kilt ensemble.

Elsewhere, it's not one but four Gaultiers who compete in ping-pong, including three wearing long-sleeved dresses in stretch tulle with an anatomical striped design, while the last wears a pinstripe suit and white tank top with a flippant white sailor hat.

These are among the pieces that will be available from the collection launched on Friday which covers ready-to-wear. -wear, accessories and swimwear. Expect a profusion of sailor-inspired pieces, many with trompe-l'oeil details, nodding to Gaultier's 1984 'Homme Objet' and 1996 'Cyberbaba' collections. The kilt will also be offered in variations ranging from traditional Scottish wear to stretch tulle and swimwear.

In a statement announcing the collection, the British artist said that the French designer's work "you encouraged being yourself, whoever you were" and was "exactly what fashion should inspire when done right."

"And that's why turning myself into Jean Paul Gaultier was easy, because I see myself in this community that he created, ”continued the interpreter.

An expert in transformation, Stone attended fashion shows as Jennifer Coolidge, the fictional Mrs. Doubtfire, Dolly Parton and even himself, as well as slipped into the looks of Kim Kardashian and Kate Moss.
