Alleged Incitement: Arrest, Prosecution of Sokoto APC President, PDP Petitions to IG
People's Democratic Party (PDP), Tambuwal Local Government Chapter in Sokoto State, has called on Inspector General of Police Usman Alkali Baba to arrest and prosecute the President of Sokoto State All Progressives Congress Umar Maitafsir for alleged offensive statement in viral video.
In a petition to the IGP, copy of the National Security Advisor to the President; Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Commissioner of Police of Sokoto State; Resident Electoral Commissioner, Sokoto State; and Director of Sokoto State Security Services, the PDP said the call for the arrest and prosecution of Maitafsir had become necessary to ensure the peaceful conduct of the gubernatorial and House of Commons elections. state assembly scheduled for March 18.
The petition jointly signed by Tambuwal Local Government PDP Chairman Alhaji Umar Tsoho Tambuwal and Local Government Party Secretary Alhaji Ibrahim Altine reads: "We the leaders and members of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) of Tambuwal Local Government Branch of Sokoto State hereby reports and brings to your attention the serious tension in the Tambuwal Local Government Area following the inflammatory statements made by All Progressives Congress (APC) President Umar Maitafsir.
“He made the offensive statement in a video that went viral on March 8, addressing his supporters in Tambuwal Local Government Town of Tambuwal, where he told members of his political party that during of the upcoming gubernatorial election in Sokoto State, it will be “a game of do or die” in Tambuwal Local Government They have provided at least ten (10) thugs with offensive weapons in each unit of vote that will attack members of other political parties and have gone further to order the annihilation of any PDP member.
"Undoubtedly, Mr. Maitafsir's statements are inflammatory, a hate speech and a breach of the peace signed by all political parties in Sokoto State that there will be peace during the elections in governorship and the state House of Assembly.
"We believe that the arrest and prosecution of Mr. Maitafsir has become necessary for the elections to be conducted peacefully in Tambuwal Local Government and in Sokoto State in general. His inflammatory statement is contrary to the article 128 of the electoral law of 2022.
