Nigeria at 62: Banditry, kidnappings, others still widespread - CAN

The newly elected President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Archbishop Daniel Okoh, has reacted to the 62nd anniversary of Nigeria's independence, saying that although Nigeria has enjoyed 23 years of unbroken democracy, it is always entangled in collective struggles.

Among the issues noted by CAN that continue to be of serious concern include insecurity, ill-regarded kidnappings, murders and beheadings of innocent citizens, the diminished value of human life, including social injustice , which angered and distressed many citizens.

His views were expressed in his message during the 62nd Independence Anniversary Service held at the National Christian Center Abuja titled “The Righteous Shall Rule the Earth”.

In his homily, “I would like to congratulate the past and present leaders of our nation since independence, especially President Muhammadu Buhari, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, on this day and appreciate his commitment to ensuring the stability of our democracy.

"To many, it seems like the wicked win it all, take it all and profit from it all. Many are worried and even scared that the wicked are about to take over the earth as we witness the desecration of the places of worship, the violent threat to the seat of political power, cheating, the flagrant theft of our oil, the flagrant degradation of our human environment, denial, betrayal, rejection and outright exclusion in many areas of our existence as a nation.”

Archbishop Okoh also lamented that with the dire situation we have found ourselves in, the bad guys seem to be making their way by making a fortune through bad practices with impunity; and terrifying the upright, pure, gentle, voiceless, honest, and hard-working individuals in our society.

He noted, however, that amidst all these quagmires, there is hope, noting that the Bible tells us that the kingdom of Israel during the time of King David went through difficult times in the country that God has given them to inherit as we experience it today in Nigeria.

His words: “God brought them out of the house of bondage in Egypt, set them free, and brought them into the land of Canaan. At one time, the bad manners of their neighbors who worshiped and served other gods caused Israel to sin. Those who sinned by engaging in idolatry and all manner of corrupt practices prospered, but the righteous who could not see God's instant judgment worried.

"It was in the midst of this situation that King David, in his years of old age, wrote the book of Psalm, chapter 37 to encourage his people, Israel, not to be tempted by the prosperity of the wicked ".
