Dickey Betts, mainstay of the Allman Brothers Band, one of the most popular and influential American rock groups of the 1970s, is died aged 80.
The guitarist and singer also wrote classic songs, including their biggest hit, 1973's Ramblin' Man.< /p>
His other compositions include Blue Sky and the instrumental Jessica, which won a Grammy Award and was used as the theme for the BBC television series Top Gear.
The group announced "with deep sadness" his death. Thursday.
"His extraordinary guitar playing alongside guitarist Duane Allman created a unique dual-guitar sound signature that became the signature sound of the genre known as the name Southern Rock", according to one statement.
"He was passionate about life, whether it was music, songwriting, fishing, hunting, boating, golf , karate or boxing Dickey was into it and excelled at whatever caught his attention."
