Almost 90% of games sold in the UK in 2022 were digital - ERA

Digital sales accounted for almost nine in 10 video games sold in the UK in 2022, according to a trade body.

The Digital Entertainment and Retail Association (ERA) said that 89.5% of games sold were digital downloads and the remaining 10.5% were actual physical copies.

About 30% of sales came from mobile apps, which are sold digitally.

In total, the gaming industry accounted for £4.7 billion in UK sales in 2022 - more than the film, TV or music industries.

The figures mean gamers were far more likely to download games through their console or PC rather than wait for a delivery o u go to a store.

ERA chief executive Kim Bayley said the game was the "often unsung leader" of the ente entertainment market.

"While the growth, at 2.3%, was lower than either video or music, its magnitude is enormous - and in terms of 'innovation and excitement, she continues to set the tone for the entire entertainment industry,' she said.
