Stunning images show houses on cliffs, from a hilltop castle in France to a house hanging from a cliff

Agata Toromanoff's Living on the Edge chronicles buildings around the world that "seem to defy the laws of gravity" from a 26-lane highway in Texas to "death" lane in Pakistan Advertisement

Architecture doesn't get much bolder than this.

The revealing new book 'Living on the Edge: Houses on Cliffs' by art and design historian Agata Toromanoff, published by Lannoo, offers a spectacular introduction to an incredible variety of buildings that 'seem to defy the laws of gravity'.

Some of the homes featured in the tome are yet-to-be-realized concepts developed by architects, while others were built on rocky peaks, towering cliffs and rolling hills everywhere from Corsica to Canada.

The editor states about the collection: "Living on the cliffs is undoubtedly an adventurous perspective - the breathtaking vistas, the unspoiled natural environment and the calm of remote places with the flair of a hideout, as well as the closeness to nature, whether it's a waterfront or a mountain range.

'From existing homes to visions of tomorrow, the projects brought together in this volume address challenges such as steep and rocky terrain, limited accessibility, extreme weather conditions and the preservation of the natural environment.'
