There are times in life when everything just falls into place, and my visit to The Bear Inn was one of those times.

Hodnet is said to be the finest Tudor village in Shropshire, with black and white half-timbered buildings on every corner and curly brick chimneys that spiral up from almost every roof.

It's near the North Wales border between Birmingham and Manchester - close enough to get there, but far enough away to feel like a true adventure.

The Bear Inn has 500 years of history; its cellars and tunnels hid wayward monks and provided respite from smugglers, and are believed to be home to ghosts. And, many moons ago, a bear was kept there, 'where free house name.
