Amechi, Awolowo, Azikwe and others demanded Nigeria's independence from Britain - Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo paid a moving tribute to the late Mbazulike Amechi.

The 93-year-old statesman and former member of the House of Representatives in 1959 died on Tuesday.

A statement from Obasanjo's spokesperson, Kehinde Akinyemi, sent condolences to the government and people of Anambra State.

Obasanjo hailed Amechi's "brilliant career" which straddled the country's political and community leaders.

He recalled that Amechi joined Chiefs Obafemi Awolowo, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Anthony Enahoro, etc., in demanding independence for Nigeria from colonial masters, Britain.

Obasabjo said the deceased was a selfless and patriotic nationalist, a tireless politician and an unyielding activist.

"Chief Amechi will also be remembered as one who gave his best as a member of the first federal cabinet.

"A decent and amiable gentleman, he commanded the respect and admiration of his peers and associates."

The statement added that Amechi was an exemplary citizen who demonstrated that politics was a way of service, not 'senseless enrichment'

Obasanjo, currently in South Africa, was in the DRC on Monday where he announced the formation of the Nigeria-Congo Business Council.
