Anambra MP collapses and dies in South Africa

A lawmaker from the Anambra State Legislative Assembly has died.

The deceased, Nnamdi Okafor, is the leader of the majority in the assembly. He represented Awka South Constituency 1 in the state assembly.

The lawmaker reportedly collapsed Wednesday morning at a hotel in Sandton City, Johannesburg, South Africa, and was confirmed dead hours later by doctors on duty.

Some state legislators traveled to South Africa to attend a training organized for them by the assembly.

The cause of his death has not yet been determined.

Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo has confirmed the death of the lawmaker.

Mr. Soludo, in a statement issued Wednesday by his spokesman, Christian Aburimé, said he was shocked by the incident.

"It is shocking that the State Assembly has lost another legislator to the cold hands of death, just three months after the death of the legislator representing Aguata 2 Constituency, Hon. Okechukwu Okoye,” he said.

Mr. Soludo described the late lawmaker as an active participant in the assembly who devoted his time and energy to representing his constituency.

"On behalf of the Anambra State Government, may I use this medium to express my sympathy to those he left behind including his family, Awka South Constituency 1 and the President of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Uche Okafor as well as other legislators,” the governor said.

Mr. Okafor is the second member of the Anambra Legislative Assembly to have died in less than three months.

In May, gunmen abducted and then beheaded Okechukwu Okoye, an MP representing Aguata 2 constituency.

Mr. Okoye was killed on May 21 along with his assistant, Cyril Chiegboka, six days after they were abducted along Aguluigbo Road in the Anaocha local government area of the state.

Before the death of MM. Okoye and Okafor, the assembly had 30 members from 21 local government areas in the state.

Their deaths reduced the number of legislators to 28.

A new election is expected to be held in the state to replace deceased lawmakers.
