A group, under the umbrella of Anambra Elite Traders Forum, has accused Anambra State Commissioner for Trade and Industry, Dr. Obinna Ngonadi, of selling offices of market leadership.

In a petition to the governor of the state, Chukwuma Soludo, the group accused Ngonadi of selling the leadership spaces of state markets to the highest bidders.

They claimed the petition became necessary to inform the governor of the commissioner's alleged atrocities and the danger such action portends to the state.

The petition was signed by executive members of the group led by Chikeluba Odiche and Micheal Nwangwu and copied to reporters in Onitsha, Anambra State on Tuesday.

They also alleged that the commissioner disobeyed legal process in the new auto parts market where he approved the construction of new stores in addition to existing ones owned by association members without their consent.

The petition reads: "We wish to inform your Excellency that the Commissioner for Trade and Industry Dr. Obinna Ngonadi is currently selling the Executive Offices in the various markets in Anambra State to the highest bidder.

"The sales bazaar passed through many markets, including Bridge-Head market, Nkpor main market, Ogbaru electronics market, Ose okwuodu market, Ogbaru main market, NASPA market Nnewi and several other markets.

"In each of these markets, the commissioner auctioned off the various leaders and positions existing in the markets, with traders paying varying amounts of money for these positions.

"The commissioner shamelessly ignores the various court cases pending regarding his illegal removal from market leaders.

"The action of this commissioner has caused many market traders to file different lawsuits in different state courts. It may interest Your Excellency to note that some of these cases involve not only the Department and the Dr Ngonadi as parties but also the Anambra State Government.”

The group claimed that at present, more than 40 court cases are pending in different courts against the State Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Anambra State Government.

Traders have, however, asked the Governor to critically examine the issue and ensure that the Commissioner is called to order and retraced his steps as the tension in the various markets is already charged , hence the need for intervention. .

Meanwhile, the Commissioner, Ngonadi, in his reaction, dismissed the petition, describing it as the work of market criminals fighting back because the government is doing the right thing.

"We are ignoring all these baseless petitions because we know what we are doing and we know they will definitely retaliate. Market criminals, we know who they are and we know they will definitely retaliate. I don't respond to such petitions, I deal with them,” Ngonadi said.
