Time for Nigerians to take governance seriously, says Iluyomade

A non-governmental organization, Arise, has instructed Nigerians to avoid destructive tendencies and be active in promoting good governance for the country to progress.

The head of Arise Women conference, Siju Iluyomade, who said this, noted that it was time for Nigerians to get actively involved in politics, saying the power of those who govern them was in their hands .

Iluyomade said this while speaking about Arise community impact in line with the 12 pillars of the UN SDGs and ahead of the Arise Walk event on Sunday in Lagos.

She said that women are not well placed for the country to reap its benefits given that they have major economic power.

“We have so many gifts in Nigeria that we don’t use at all. We don’t involve our women well in nation building; women have the economic power. exploits in business, politics and in all the fields entrusted to them.”

She added, "How responsive are we to achieving good governance? Are we prepared to continue to see our people suffer? Are we happy to see neighbors unable to feed themselves? Are we happy to see little children going to bed hungry?"

Iluyomade said access to good education, clean water, food and clothing is the right of all Nigerians, adding that it is time for the country to emerge from poverty and illness after 62 years of independence.

She added, however, that there would be less expenditure on the part of the federal government if Nigerians embrace preventive health care.

She urged Nigerians to take the route of preventative rather than curative health care as it is cost effective and life saving.

She lamented that people are taking a reactionary rather than a proactive approach, adding that there is a need to see the rate of life expectancy increase.

"As a nation, we will spend less money if people can take preventive health care. It is easier for us to focus on preventive health care than curative.

"Instead of people being proactive, most prefer to be reactive which forces them to spend a lot of money on health care. We would like to see the life expectancy rate of Nigerians increase to have a life richer and better. At Arise, we've empowered over 50 million people in health," she said.
