Android 15 goes cold and creamy for its dessert-themed codename

An Android robot at outside a Google building.

TL;DR

The dessert-themed codename from Android 15 has been dropped. The next major OS update after Android 14 is known internally as Vanilla Ice Cream. The codename was found in the AOSP as a series of code changes.

It's hard to believe, but it's been a month since Google released the first Developer Preview of Android 14. As such, chances are most people reading this haven't had a chance to try out Android 14 yet. Despite the fact that Google is still working on the next major OS update, it is already looking ahead and has given the successor to Android 14 the name code Vanilla Ice Cream.

If you have followed the history of Android, you know that the operating system usually comes with a code name. You probably also know that Google tends to give its codenames a dessert theme. For example, version 1.5 was called Cupcake, the next update was called Donut, and version 2.0 was called Eclair.

Over the past few years, unfortunately, Google has somewhat downplayed these names, using them for their initial development status only. Therefore, you might not know that Android 13 was called Tiramisu. And we found out last year that Android 14 was called Upside Down Cake.

Today, Mishaal Rahman revealed in a tweet that Android 15's internal codename is Vanilla Ice Cream. This revelation came a little earlier than usual. For reference, we learned the codename of Android 14 in April 2022. If you are wondering how this codename was discovered, it seems that it was found in the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) under the form of a series of code changes.
