Andy Murray explains reasons for US Open success after difficult conditions against Cerundolo

Andy Murray has opened up about how he battled through hot, humid conditions to earn a first-round victory over Francisco Cerundolo at the US Open. The 2012 champion needed two hours and 42 minutes to dispatch the 24th seed with a 7-5 6-3 6-3 win and seemed to be handling the heat well after his recent cramping issues.

A decade after winning his maiden Grand Slam title at Flushing Meadows, Murray started his 2022 campaign with a straight-set victory over the No. 24 seed to open the game at Louis Armstrong Stadium on the first day of the US Open. /p>

The former world number 1 entered the tournament with physical problems, having suffered from cramps in his previous tournaments in Cincinnati and Washington, but managed to prevail in the heat of the day in New York , although he admitted it was still a struggle. “It felt like five sets to me. Conditions are very, very tricky today. Very humid and hot," he joked during his on-court interview.

"I'm really happy with how I got through this one. He had a brilliant year and I knew I had to play well. Even though we started at 11am, the atmosphere was great and I really enjoyed it." The 35-year-old is full of praise for himself as he explains how he stayed mentally strong despite fearing he might cramp again in the hot weather.

Speaking to Amazon Prime Video after the match, the world number 51 said: "I think I did well given that mentally it's not easy to come into a match in five sets in those conditions against a guy who moves you a lot with what's Happened recently and I've done very well mentally to get through it It's important to give me a pat on the back with that stuff sometimes because it's rare for anyone else to do it.

"I think I did well with that and in the end when it got tough, I just hung on, picked up really well and managed to get through." Murray was also pleased with his tactics during the game as he explained how he managed to defeat the 24th seed.

"I tried to use my strengths which was the serve sometimes - maybe not so good in the end but I got quite a few free points on my serve," he continued . "I used my high forehand down the line well, my cross backhand and down the line were good. I didn't let him camp in the backhand corner and hit too many forehands. When he did that, he's extremely dangerous, at times when he had the chance he would move me around a lot but I didn't let him do that too often."
