Apapa Customs generated N1.02 billion in 2022

The Apapa Region Command of the Nigerian Customs Service said it generated revenue worth N1.02 trillion between January and December 2022.

On Thursday, speaking to reporters at Apapa Command in Lagos State, the Customs Area Comptroller in charge of the command, Comptroller Malanta Yusuf, said the figure was 16% higher than to the 870 billion naira collected by the command in the previous year 2021.

“This feat was made possible by the resilience of our officers and men to block revenue leaks and ensure that all unpaid declarations and unused pre-arrival assessment reports have been traced and accounted for in federal government coffers"

He also said N28.2 billion worth of goods were exported through the command during the reporting period.

Yusuf said that in 2022, the order saw a total of $68.5 million in FOB export shipments.

He also said the figure had a total tonnage of 6.4 metric meters.

"Items exported through Apapa port last year 2022 include steel bars, agricultural products such as hibiscus, sesame, cocoa, cashew nuts, ginger, seeds soy and mineral products,” he said.

Yusuf, however, said the industry saw a backdrop in trade from the second quarter of 2022.

"It will be remembered that from the second quarter of last year, the industry experienced a backdrop in trade, caused by the fluctuation of the exchange rate and a sharp drop in purchasing power consumers who have made trading unpredictable.

“In the year under review, a total number of 157 containers with a duty paid value of N14.4 billion naira were seized, compared to 102 containers with a DPV of 32 billion naira seized in 2021 .

The Customs boss said that counterfeit and banned drugs without the necessary certification from the National Agency for Food Drug Administration and Control and overdosed Tramadol drugs are at the top of the list of seizures made the last year.

“Other items seized include codeine syrup, foreign parboiled rice, vegetable oil, processed/unprocessed wood, used clothing, etc. stages of investigation and prosecution by other government agencies that we have assigned to the relevant agency,” he said.
