The Kogi State Government, through the Ministry of Solid Minerals and Natural Resources, has ordered a total halt to illegal mining in the state.

The guidelines followed the deaths of two people at an illegal mining site after the site collapsed at Ika-Ogboyaga in the Ankpa Local Government Area.

The names of the deceased were given as Amodu and Attah.

They died on Saturday August 28, 2022 around 4:20 p.m. when the mine site collapsed.

A statement signed by the Kogi State Commissioner for Solid Minerals and Natural Resources, Engr. Bashiru Gegu, said that all legal operators should now register with the Ministry of Solid Minerals and Natural Resources to build peace and crime-free sites.

The government expressed concern about the activities of some unknown operators at mine sites and advised them to register with the Ministry of Solid Minerals and Natural Resources to determine genuine miners.

The statement says that if the directive is not followed, the state government will shut down offending operators and mine sites.

The Commander of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corp, Oyinloye JK, said an investigation had begun to determine the owner of the site.

He also confirmed that the deceased was buried in accordance with Islamic laws.

He said he had ordered the head of the NSCDC division to liaise with the traditional ruler so as not to allow any further illegal activities in this community at this time until the investigation is over.
