APC senator supports impeachment plan against Buhari

An All Progressives Congress (APC) senator, Elisha Abbo, supported the decision of opposition senators to impeach President Muhammadu Buhari.

Mr. Abbo, who represents the Adamawa North Senatorial District, said the president had failed in his primary duty to secure the nation and its people.

He made the comment at a summit of APC Christian leaders in Abuja on Friday. Some prominent APC members also rejected the party's Muslim-Muslim ticket at the event.

Mr Abbo's comment came barely 48 hours after opposition senators, mostly from the People's Democratic Party (PDP), walked out of the plenum and threatened to serve the president with a notice of dismissal if he failed to address the worsening insecurity across the country.

PREMIUM TIMES reported how Senate Speaker Ahmad Lawan rejected a motion on insecurity and an attempt to impeach the president. The defeated motion was proposed by Senate Minority Leader Philip Aduda of the PDP.

The opposition senators, numbering more than 20 thereafter, left the plenary. They later gave the president a six-week ultimatum to fight insecurity in the country or risk being impeached.

Speaking to Channels TV, Mr Abbo said he fully supports the impeachment decision against the President because Mr Buhari “failed in his fundamental responsibility to protect the life and property of the people”.

Earlier, Senator Kogi Smart Adeyemi, who is also a member of the APC, confirmed that the impeachment decision was a collective decision of the entire Senate.

"It's a collective decision. Maybe four or so senators have reservations about it," he told reporters.

The decision to impeach the president follows violent attacks across the country and security threats in the federal capital.

While some Nigerians welcomed the decision to impeach opposition senators, others said they waited too long to act and only threatened impeachment because the criminals launched attacks in Abuja.
