A huge fish tank exploded inside a German hotel today, triggering a water "tsunami" which caused "incredible maritime events". damage' to a major tourist attraction.

The 25-meter-tall tank, located in the lobby of the Radisson Blu Hotel in central Berlin, was erupted around 5:50 a.m., killing the 1,500 tropical fish that were housed there.

The AquaDom aquarium explosion spilled a million liters of water in the hall and cut off the electricity in the Hotel. Two people were injured by shards of glass and were treated in hospital.

There was speculation of freezing temperatures overnight which caused a crack in the glass tank, which then exploded under the weight of the water - but police are still investigating the cause.

Now efforts are underway to save an additional 400-500 small fish housed in tanks below the lobby. Without electricity, their tanks were not getting the oxygen they needed to survive, officials said.
