'Avatar' Opening Box Office Is Strong, But Still Underperforms

The new movie 'Avatar' has already garnered an impressive number of ticket sales for the first day of its opening weekend, but overall... it looks like this one is going to disappoint.< /p>
James Cameron's "The Way of Water" - the long-awaited sequel to 2009's hit "Avatar" - was able to gross around $53 million on Friday (including around $17 million from Thursday previews). .. and , right now, is on track to earn between $130 million and $150 million through Sunday.
That might sound impressive...but it's actually a little disappointing given that early projections for this were around $150-175 million, which is a bit of a steep drop. Of course, the big question is whether the movie has the legs like OG did over a decade ago.
