'Barbie' sparks sales of Barbiecore clothes and dolls, Euromonitor projects

Thanks to the highly anticipated film "Barbie", the doll industry is expected to reach 14 billion dollars by 2027. Sales of dolls and accessories are expected to increase by 16% by 2026, compared to 2022, following a drop in sales during the pandemic, according to a new study by Euromonitor International.

Loo Wee Teck, Head of Toys and Games at Euromonitor International, sees interest in the film for Barbie and dolls worldwide, which in 2022 generated $12.1 billion in sales and is expected to reach $12.5 billion in 2023.

"After a dismal 2022 when doll sales were negatively impacted due to high prices amid economic uncertainty, owner Mattel expects a strong 2023 thanks to the halo of the Barbie movie and the relaunch of Monster High dolls, new Disney Princess and Frozen toys,” Teck said.

Part of this halo is the Barbiecore fashion trend, which picked up after the trailers from the film, which stars Margot Robbie and will be released on July 21, hit in the summer of 2022. More and more brands have incorporated pink into their collections.

"The Barbiecore trend in fashion started last year with the Balmain x Barbie collection, but 2023 has seen a lot more brands embracing rich shades of hot pink, from Valentino collections to H&M collections, in anticipation of the long-awaited release of the Barbie movie,” said Marguerite Le Rolland, Head of Apparel and Footwear at Euromonitor Internationals.

As noted, "Barbie" is expected to gross over $93 million at the box office over its week -opening end - a substantial increase from the original estimate of $55 million.
