Brazil must have no regrets according to Alisson despite World Cup failure

Brazil should have no regrets despite failing to progress past World Cup quarter-finals, says goalkeeper Alisson.

The Seleçao drew 1-1 with Croatia after extra time at the Education City stadium on Friday, with Bruno Petkovic canceling out Neymar's record-breaking opener.

Brazil couldn't regain momentum in the shootout, with Rodrygo missing his first penalty and Marquinhos hitting the post with his attempt as Croatia won a 4-2 triumph to seal their place in the last square for a second running World Cup.

Alisson couldn't prevent any of Croatia's penalties but he thinks Brazil - who will also be under a new coach after Tite reiterated his intention to quit - shouldn't think twice too hard on his performance in Qatar.

"I think what hasn't worked out is that it's football - anything can happen," Alisson said.

"People were talking about us as favorites because of what we were doing on the pitch, because of our performance, because of the quality of our players.

"I said before, we have nothing to regret, we wouldn't change anything because we fought, we prepared and were ready to try to win the World Cup.

"It's football, things don't always go our way. No regrets, we're looking forward to the challenge ahead."

Alisson conceded that "the frustration is huge" but added: "We're proud of the dedication of every player, the things we did on the pitch. The performances were really good.

"In my opinion, we didn't deserve to lose this game, although in the World Cup there can be penalties and unfortunately we were beaten on that."

Brazil certainly had the best of the game before the shootout, with Croatia's only shot on target when Petkovic's effort deflected off Marquinhos.

The Seleçao managed 21 attempts, registering an expected goal (xG) of 2.55 compared to Croatia's 0.63.

Alisson's counterpart Dominik Livakovic was in exceptional form, making 11 saves - he was only beaten by Neymar's moment of brilliance, which brought Brazil's talisman back to record level of Pelé with 77 international goals.

Neymar, who could have played his last World Cup game, had to be consoled by his teammates after the match, while striker Richarlison was in tears when he addressed the media.

Alisson, however, suggested the setback would only make Brazil's squad bigger.

"We are going to have players who must mobilize now, show leadership," he added. "We have so many players who can lead a team, so many who already do, even young players.

"We have young talents who will still improve, learn from this World Cup and we also have more experienced players who can still contribute.

"Now it's hard to think about the future, because we're in so much pain right now, but I hope the future will be bright for us. We just have to accept this defeat, learn from it and move on."
