CAF Champions League: Plateau United arrives in Tunis for a crucial second leg

One of the two teams representing Nigeria in the CAF Champions League, Plateau United, arrived in Tunisia ahead of their second preliminary round clash against Esperance.

The Peace Boys, as Plateau United are affectionately called, beat the four-time African champions 2-1 last weekend at M.KO Abiola Stadium in Abuja.

The Nigerian flag bearers are now looking to build on their slim victory in Saturday's crucial second leg clash at the famous Rades Stadium in Tunis.

Albert Dakup, Plateau United's media manager, in a statement on Thursday evening, said the club's 37-man contingent in Tunis was led by State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Daniel Dung Dalyop

"The contingent of thirty-seven men who landed a few minutes after four Tunisian hours, at the international airport of Carthage, on board a Turkish airline, was led by the State Commissioner of the Plateau at the youth and sports, Daniel Dung Dalyop along with his predecessor, Victor Lapang and the club's general manager, Pius Henwan,” the statement read in part.

Mr. Dakup confirmed that virtually all of the players who featured in the first leg in Abuja made the trip except for Douglas Eru who was dropped for Mustapha Abdullahi for tactical reasons.

After assuring football-loving Nigerians that he will present an attacking line-up against the Tunisian powerhouses, there are indications that coach Fidelis Ilechukwu could alter the squad to achieve that goal.

Plateau United, who did not progress beyond the second round of Africa's premier club competition after two previous attempts, have set their sights on advancing to the group stage of the competition this season.

Plateau United must avoid defeat to advance to the lucrative group stage of the competition, a task that seems Herculean on paper given the pedigree of its host.

Rivers United are the second Nigerian team in the Champions League and they also have a tough task in Morocco in the second leg where they will face Wydad AC.
