Ministerial candidates: Senate promises 'thorough review' and begins exercise on Monday

The Senate announces that it will begin screening ministerial candidates on Monday.

Senate Media and Public Affairs Committee Chairman Yemi Adaramodu disclosed this while speaking to reporters shortly after Thursday's plenary.

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday transmitted a list of 28 ministerial nominees to the upper house for consideration and possible confirmation.

Mr. Adaramodu said the candidates will undergo intensive screening by lawmakers.

The Senate spokesman noted that the Senate's two-month vacation that should have started on Thursday (today) has been put on hold for the selection of ministerial candidates.

“We have suspended all rules and laws. We were supposed to go on vacation today, but it has been suspended for this screening,” he said.

Mr. Adaramodu said applicants will be strictly vetted based on their background and accomplishments.

“This time the selection will be very thorough. It will not be a situation where scouting will happen anyway. We are going to know the background of the nominees and we are not going to disappoint the Nigerians.

“It will not be a superficial projection. You have to have the character, you have to have the face, you have to have the demeanor to be part of the cabin crew that is going to fly in Nigeria.

“Nigeria this time is going to be better. Anyone who comes on the floor of the Senate will be screened. We will not fabricate any questions,” he said.

Call for more information

Mr. Adaramodu also called on Nigerians to make information available to the Senate if they notice that anyone on the list is found to be corrupt.

He said if information is made available to the senate, questions will be asked based on the allegations.

"Anyone who has something against these names that have been called should send in questions that will be asked. As nominees you must explain yourself, we will not fabricate questions.

"Nominees have been sent to us, we are not going to pre-empt anything. There will be reports from the security agencies.

"If any nominees are coming in and there's a red flag over the nominees, we're going to face the red flag. It's not going to be a closed screening. What I want you to know is that we will not disappoint the Nigerians, we will do a thorough job,” Mr Adaramodu said.
