Campaign aims to reduce worsening poverty in Nigeria

As political activity ahead of the 2023 general elections heats up, pro-poor development organization PUSH AFRICA has launched a national initiative to redirect the attention of politicians and policymakers to pressing challenges posed by the escalation of poverty in the country.

The initiative titled "DO-ONE-THING CAMPAIGN" is designed to advocate and support the Nigerian government's efforts to halve the number of poor people in the country by 2030.

It also aims to support similar anti-poverty initiatives by development agencies and private sector institutions.

According to Doris Egberamen, founder of PUSH AFRICA, one of the main objectives of the campaign is to attract the attention of potential leaders who aspire to compete for various political positions in order to give priority attention to the increase dazzling number of poor people. in the country and show Nigerians that they have a practical and achievable plan to tackle the widespread and growing poverty in their various constituencies.

She explained that a key part of the campaign is to create a platform where Nigerians most affected by poverty can tell their own stories as it affects them in order to show the depth and harsh realities with which they live.

The projection, she says, is that by exposing the conditions of vulnerability in which they live, elected and appointed leaders of the nation will be encouraged to take serious and concrete action to address the problem.

PUSH AFRICA lamented that statistics show that around 95.1 million Nigerians, almost half of the country's population, still live below the poverty line.

""The current situation is worrying and if we are not deliberate on this issue, the statistics will continue to worsen and the consequences in terms of negative socio-economic impact and underdevelopment will continue to increase" , she said.< /p>

She added, "For the sake of our current and future generations, we cannot allow this to happen. As an organization, we are indeed troubled by this rise, hence the urgent call to all stakeholders to do something drastic and concrete in the face of this pandemic of poverty in this country.”

While acknowledging the efforts of the current administration in terms of the will displayed by the President, Muhammadu Buhari and the enormous work accomplished so far, PUSH AFRICA believes that there is still a lot of work to be done and that there is a need to troubleshoot current efforts to find out what works and what doesn't.

"We need to verify that the managed solutions are working properly and identify problem areas that need more attention," she stressed.
