Can you solve clues separated from their grids?

In our For Beginners series, we always want to emphasize that clues don't solve themselves. A clue that seems disconcerting at first may later, once certain letters have been provided, turn out to be obvious.

As an experiment, I wonder if it is possible to solve any of the following clues in, so to speak, isolation? No grid, no cross letters.

Set 1 (Paul)

9a Quickly discovered, like some kind of wrinkle? (6)

5d Stop! You'll never go out again (10)

28a An oven where the air heats up first? (7)

Set 2 (Picaron)

31a Like bagpipes, but a different device (5)

2d Beautiful interior changes with excellent decor (5)

13a Forgot for a Moment (8)

Set 3 (Enigmatist)

3a Very useful in that regard! (6.8)

1d Respond well to the teacher? (5.6)

1a Should the body be on this side? Why not? (6.7)

Set 4 (Pasquale)

25a A clown seems to be in trouble with the law (4)

3d Where to find something no one can find? (6)

8a Dishonorable act? So-called family event during the birth of children (9)

Tell us how you are doing, and I will report to you. Don't bend your brain unnecessarily.

Partly but not primarily enigmatic, Alan Connor's thought-provoking expedition forecast book may be obtained from Guardian Library< /em>
