Carragher slams 'poor' Man Utd player after 'absolute nonsense' claiming club 'favours English players'

Jamie Carragher has slammed Manchester United's Eric Bailly after the defender claimed the Premier League club 'favors English players'.

Bailly caused a stir with his comments. The centre-back is set to spend this season on loan with Marseille in Ligue 1. His contract expires next year.

The French squad has a fairly random squad at the moment as Bailly's current teammates include Nuno Tavarez, Matteo Guendouzi, Alexis Sanchez and Dimitri Payet.

Ole Mark II? Manchester United are so much better under Erik Ten Hag with Eriksen and co

The Red Devils paid around £30m to sign Bailly from Villarreal in La Liga in 2016 and it turned out to be a waste of money.

The 28-year-old has only featured 70 times for Man Utd in the Premier League in six seasons as he has been severely hampered by injuries.

United were terrible last season, but Bailly only played for them four times in the league, with Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof being preferred over him.

Maguire was criticized more than most, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick were blocked by the Man Utd captain.

Bailly now seems to have taken aim at Maguire, suggesting that he receives preferential treatment given that he is English:

"The club should avoid favoring English players and give everyone a chance," Bailly said.

"They should encourage competition in the locker room, not just look for a few. I always felt that the national player was a priority.

"That doesn't happen at Chelsea or other big Premier League clubs. Some people take it for granted that they're going to start, and that weakens the team. Fortunately, [Erik] Ten Hag has a lot of character and hopefully he can change that dynamic.

"I played important games and in some I was chosen as the best player. I think when I had the chance, I took the chance. I just missed consistency, because I think I deserved more minutes."

Liverpool legend Carragher has now dismissed Bailly's suggestions as he feels Man Utd have been hampered by their own 'poor' performances.

He also claimed that Maguire "is a better player" than Bailly and that his comments are "absolute nonsense":

"This is absolute nonsense, Eric Bailly was regularly injured and poor when he played," Carragher said on Twitter.

"That's why they keep buying players to replace him! Harry Maguire is a better player."
