CBS has triggered what could be a devastating ripple effect on Twitter... by hitting the pause button, indefinitely, to post new tweets amid uncertainty under the leadership of Elon Musk.< /p>

The network's news division, CBS News, announced Friday that it will suspend all Twitter activity from its official profiles as it continues to monitor things. CBS News says it's doing this out of an abundance of caution and in light of all the tumultuous updates.

CBS News' decision was first announced on Friday during the broadcast of "CBS Evening News with Norah O'Donnell" that night, during which reporter Jonathan Vigliotti apparently announced the decision to the name of the whole company. CBS confirmed this shortly after.

Vigliotti was reporting on rumors of chaos at the Bird app headquarters...where a majority of employees have reportedly quit recently, leaving Twitter as a rudimentary operation and in danger of shutting down altogether. It hasn't quite happened yet, but the fear is there.

CBS News' last original tweet links to a story about the former WH Press Sec. Jen Psaki's failed efforts to overturn a subpoena she was chained to. The account also retweeted a TV segment discussing the DOJ's new special counsel investigating Trump. Both were posted almost 24 hours ago, and CBS News hasn't tweeted anything new since.

Ditto for local affiliates, it seems. KPIX — the Bay Area branch of CBS News — hasn't tweeted anything since yesterday either ... and that policy appears to apply to most, if not all, CBS stations across the country. We should note that they still post stories on their homepages.

The reason this is such a big deal - assuming it continues for a long time - is that Twitter has become the go-to source for news... not just for users, but for news outlets. press themselves. Many outlets rely on Twitter to deliver information quickly, not to mention captured traffic as one of the top social media sites and the wide reach it has.
