Opening of the Charlie Le Mindu exhibition at Artcurial

HAUTE COIFFURE: For artist Charlie Le Mindu, to put 21 of his hair creations under the hammer at Artcurial in Paris on October 5 is bittersweet.

"In general, I have very mixed emotions, because I separate myself from the things I love," said Le Mindu, during the opening of the exhibition of his work held at the Rive droite auction house on Wednesday evening. "But you know, as I said before, it's good because I need new stuff, and I have over 200 archives back home in Brooklyn. I have to get away from them now."

The Mindu had people from Artcurial choose the works that would appear in the auction that will take place both in person and online, starting at 5 p.m. HEC. But, of course, he helped make the selection, to make sure everything fit together.

Among the key pieces that Le Mindu likes and which are sold at auction, there are two sculptures of hair all over his body, called "Lion's Manes", which were inspired by a fungus found in the northern hemisphere. Their sale is estimated between 180,000 and 200,000 euros.

"It's my favorite, because they've been in so many things, and I love wearing them myself. It's the only thing I've done that I can wear," Le Mindu said with a laugh.

Another favorite is the fluorescent jellyfish-like creation titled "Fluorescent Species" which must be carried over someone's head. The estimate for this ranges from 11,000 euros to 12,000 euros.

In the exhibition catalog, curator Benoît Coffin calls Le Mindu, the artist at the origin of the concept of Haute Coiffure, a "visionary".

"Charlie's work is in constant motion, and can only be understood through the idea of a trajectory, one that began its journey in the early 2000s," Coffin wrote. "From 'Blonde Lips' to the costumes worn by Lady Gaga to the famous 'Lion's Manes', each piece of this sale-event is a masterpiece of virtuosity and creativity."

The Mindu, indeed, never stops. In addition to preparing for the auction, he is currently working on a ballet in Monaco and the upcoming Vivienne Westwood and Kayne West shows during the ongoing Paris Fashion Week. A little further down the road is a ballet in Berlin and a cabaret in Miami, Florida.
