ChatGPT's Android app arrives the last week of July

When OpenAI launched a ChatGPT app for iPhone in May, it promised Android users would get theirs soon. Now the company has announced that ChatGPT for Android will be rolling out to users next week. Moreover, its Google Play listing is already in place and users can pre-register to get it as soon as it becomes available.

It's unclear if the app will initially only be available in the US, like the iPhone app, but I was able to pre-order it from Asia. OpenAI expanded the reach of the iOS app to other regions just a few days after its release, so the Android app will likely soon be accessible in other countries, even though it's only launching in the US.

People can already access ChatGPT on Android through a browser, but the interface, while not terribly difficult to navigate, isn't ideal for mobile devices. A dedicated application means a mobile-optimized interface, as well as features adapted to platform users. iOS users, for example, got support for Siri and Shortcuts in June. They can create a ChatGPT prompt in Shortcuts and save it as a link to send to friends, and they can ask Siri to launch the app or create these shortcuts, among other things.

OpenAI recently started testing a new opt-in feature for ChatGPT Plus subscribers that gives the AI ​​chatbot continuous memory. When the feature is enabled, the chatbot remembers who the user is across conversations, which the company says can streamline queries. The feature was designed to work across the platform, which means paid Android users who sign up will likely see continuous memory in their app when it's released.
