Commonwealth Games: Buhari and Sports Minister celebrate Nigeria team

As the curtain draws back on the 22nd Commonwealth Games, Birmingham 2022, President Muhammadu Buhari celebrated the athletes who have gloriously represented Nigeria in the competition.

The President joined millions of other sports-loving Nigerians to watch some of the colorful and spectacular moments of the 11-day competition, which featured 5,000 athletes representing 72 nations and territories, competing for 280 medals .

Hailing the memorable display by the athletes of Team Nigeria, the President congratulated the “94 worthy ambassadors who proudly displayed the Nigerian flag at nine sporting events, and for those exciting moments when the medal winners made us smile by breaking world, national, and game records, as well as achieving personal bests in their careers.”

With 35 medals, including 12 gold, 9 silver and 14 bronze already collected by the end of the evening of the 10th day of the Games, and more medals likely for the country on the last day, the president thanked the shining stars of Nigeria for competing among the best in the world and for displaying the God given attributes of the true Nigerian - never give up, strive until the end.

According to the President, "It should be noted that the majority of medals to date, including 12 gold for the country, have been won by our talented young women and girls, including multi-medal winner Tobi Amusan (100 women's hurdles and 4x100m relay), Favor Ofili, Rosemary Chukwuma, Grace Nwokocha (4x100m relay); Miesinnei Mercy Genesis (50kg), Blessing Oborududu (57kg) and Odunayo Adekuoroye (57kg) in women's freestyle; as well than Adijat Adenike Olarinoye (55kg) and Rafiatu Folashade Lawal (59kg) in female weightlifting”.

Other gold medalists are Folashade Oluwafemiayo, women's heavyweight in para powerlifting, Eucharia Iyiazi, women's shot put, Chioma Onyekwere and Goodness Nwachukwu in women's discus throw, and Ese Brume, long jump.

The President also commended the coaching staff and team officials for their passion towards the development of the sport in the country, assuring them that history will remember them for all their contributions to make shine our athletes on the international stage.

Youth and Sports Development Minister Sunday Dare also congratulated the athletes and officials of the Nigeria team for their record-breaking performance at the games.

Nigeria finished seventh in the medal table with a record 35 medals: 12 gold, 9 silver and 14 bronze. The Nigeria team is also the first ranked African nation at the Games, also a first-ever appearance at the Commonwealth Games.

Nigerian athletes have broken old Commonwealth records and set many new records. More than four decades without medals in some sports have also been shattered.
