Corruption and poor governance fuel poverty in Nigeria – Group

The Center for Citizens with Disabilities has blamed poor governance and corruption for the rising poverty rate in Nigeria.

CSD Executive Director David Anyaele made this known in a statement on Monday to commemorate the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, which is held annually on October 17.

The theme of this year's event is "Dignity for All in Practice".

Anyaele, in the statement, blamed Nigerian leaders for increasing poverty in the country.

He said, "This demoralizing poverty situation in Nigeria is man-made; fueled by bad governance and corruption in high places. Unfortunately, when people fall into poverty, their chance of contracting a disability increases, as poverty has been linked as a major source of disability, even though disability pushes families into extreme poverty.

“The current group of Nigerian leaders have failed to alleviate poverty in the country. They have knowingly or unknowingly contributed to the growing number of disabled people due to their inability to cope with the growing number of Nigerians who are sinking in extreme poverty."

Speaking on the 2023 elections, Anyaele called on candidates to make poverty reduction a key campaign issue.

He said, “As the 2023 General Election draws near, we call on Nigerians to make poverty reduction a key campaign issue.

“The candidates of political parties for the State Houses of Assembly, Governorship, National Assembly and President must tell Nigerians how they intend to bend the curve of the poverty in Nigeria.

"Citizens must be prepared to hold elected officials accountable for poverty alleviation as the poverty situation in Nigeria is man-made, mainly due to poor governance."
