Having had 144 points behind in the first innings, Essex recovered enough to declare at tea on 362-8 in their second innings, giving Nottinghamshire 39 overs to chase 219 to win.

In other circumstances they might have seen a required rate of 5.6 runs per over like in their compass, but they were respectful enough of the threat posed by out-spinner Simon Harmer in dry conditions on day four pitch to not risk defeat in pursuit of victory.

They were 97-4, still 122 points short of their theoretical target when the parties agreed to call it a day with five of the scheduled overs unplayed.

Joe Clarke took 42 steps, with him and fifth-wicket partner Steven Mullaney surviving 10 overs with most Essex outfield players clustered around the bat.

Earlier today former England captain Sir Alastair Cook, who never made a century on this ground, failed with a tantalizing run to correct the statistical anomaly in their record, but skipper Tom Westley scored 95 and Tom Lawrence 52 to put Essex in a strong position.

Allrounder Lyndon James was the pick of a Nottinghamshire attack in which Brett Hutton was unable to play due to injury , taking 3-67, including Cook's wicket.

Leg-spinning Calvin Harrison finished 3-52 in his Championship debut.< /p>
