Court order dismissing Delta PDP gubernatorial candidate, sitting at INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has received the court order which disqualifies Sheriff Oborevwori as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) gubernatorial candidate in Delta State.

Mr. Oborevwori, who is also the Speaker of the Delta House of Assembly, was accused of providing false information and submitting false certificates in order to participate and become the winner of the gubernatorial primary of the PDP in the State.

The order, issued on July 7 by Judge Taiwo Taiwo of the Federal High Court in Abuja, was served on INEC at its headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, PREMIUM TIMES has learned.

The order directed the PDP and INEC to replace Mr Oborevwori's name with that of the complainant, David Edevbie, who received the second highest number of votes in the party's gubernatorial primary .

"The 1st Respondent (Mr. Oborevwori) should and should be barred, barred or otherwise restricted from holding, marching and/or running as the 2nd Respondent's (PDP) candidate for the upcoming gubernatorial elections in Delta State scheduled to be held on March 11, 2023 by the 3rd Respondent (INEC),” Judge Taiwo said in the order.

Mr. Oborevwori reportedly used the names Oborevwori Sheriff and Francis Orohwedor interchangeably in his certificates submitted to INEC.

The dismissal of Mr. Oborevwori has the potential to change the politics of Delta State.

This is a huge political loss for the Governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa, who had given political support to Mr. Oborevwori, who is his ally.

Mr. Edevbie, the man replacing Mr Oborevwori, is a known ally of a former Delta State Governor, James Ibori.

An influential group in Delta State, Urhobo Progress Union, had backed Mr. Edevbie for the gubernatorial race ahead of the PDP primary that produced Mr. Oborevwori.

Mr. Oborevwori went to the Abuja Court of Appeal, asking the Court of Appeal to overturn the order that sacked him.
