Crunchyroll lowers monthly subscription fees in nearly 100 regions

Crunchyroll is changing prices for users in nearly 100 countries and territories, but not in the way you would probably expect. Instead of increasing the cost of monthly subscriptions, Crunchyroll is reducing them to give users "even more value". The move could also help the anime-focused streaming service attract more subscribers.

In the UK, the Mega Fan plan (which allows offline viewing and up to four simultaneous streams) now costs £6 per month instead of £8. The lower tier Fan plan is £5, down from £6.50. Users in India will see a much bigger price drop. Instead of 10 USD per month for a Mega Fan subscription, they will pay 99 rupees, which is around 1.25 USD. Meanwhile, users in Brazil will save around 37.5% each month and those in the United Arab Emirates will pay around 50% less on a monthly basis.

Crunchyroll's announcement includes a full list of countries and territories where it is dropping prices, including regions in Europe, the Caribbean, South America, Africa, and the Middle East. There are some notable omissions, notably in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Sony bought Crunchyroll from AT&T in 2021 and brought Funimation content there earlier this year. Given that Crunchyroll is the go-to streaming service for anime fans, it wouldn't have been surprising to see Sony increase the monthly fee. Instead, it makes Crunchyroll more competitive against Netflix and Hulu, which each have anime deals but have increased their prices over the past year.
