Dave Chappelle's show canceled over transgender joke controversy

Comedian Dave Chappelle had his live show canceled at the last minute due to n of controversy over some of his jokes.

Minnesota's First Avenue venue apologized for booking it and said the show would be moved to another theater.

Chappelle has received both huge support and intense criticism for his jokes about transgender people during recent routines of stand-up.

First Avenue said he must hold himself "to the highest standards". Chappelle has not yet commented.

Chappelle's live broadcasts and specials, as well as the platforms that host them, regularly attract criticism due to comments he made during previous routines that some viewers find offensive.

In a statement posted to Instagram, First Avenue said, "To the staff, artists and our community, we hear you and we're sorry. We know that we hold ourselves to the highest standards, and we know we've let you down.

"We're not just a black box with people inside, and we understand that First Ave is not just a room, but a meaning beyond our walls.

The place "welcomes feedback"

"The First Avenue team and you have worked hard to make our places the safest spaces in the country, and we will continue that mission.

"We believe in diversity of voice and freedom of artistic expression, but in honoring this we lose sight of the impact it would have.

The statement added: "We know that some will disagree with this decision; you are welcome to send dback fees."

The sold-out show had instead been moved to the Varsity Theater, which is about 40 minutes...
