David Moyes tells West Ham fans to 'give back' as defeat leaves Hammers in last three

David Moyes has called on West Ham fans to 'give back' to the club after they crashed into the Premier League relegation zone following the loss to Wolves.

Hammers are now down on the table only on goal difference after Daniel Podence scored the game's only goal to give Wolves a 1-0 victory at Molineux.

After a game of little quality and few chances, West Ham have now taken a point from the last 21 offered.

This is quite the contrast to the previous two seasons, which saw Moyes lead the club to sixth and seventh places and to the semi-finals of the Europa League last year.

Now Moyes wants the fans to repay the club for those successes by supporting the team as they continue to struggle, hosting an equally out-of-form Everton next weekend.

"What we have given to West Ham supporters in recent years, I hope they can give back to us," he said.

"We are going through a difficult period. If they give us back everything that the staff and the players have given to the club in the last two years, I'm sure it will help us.

"You always want the support of your home support and we always have had it. Hopefully that continues.

"We've probably raised expectations considerably in recent years, being in Europe, sixth and seventh in the Premier League for the past two years. I can understand the disappointment and frustration and maybe they can't. not really understand why it is like that.

"That's quite often the path you have to take when trying to climb the tree and trying to improve. Probably with what we've achieved in the last couple of years, and avoiding relegation there three years old, building on what we've done means everyone's a little disappointed, which they should be."

Moyes will no doubt come under increasing pressure after the latest setback and he admits he's long enough in the tooth to know his position will be discussed.

"I would never look at myself and say I have credit in the bank," added the former Everton and Manchester United boss.

"A lot of people are looking for a job in this league. I'm not stupid, I've had enough games to understand. You have to do well to keep your job. We have to try to do better than what we are doing right now."

As victory knocks Wolves out of the bottom three at the expense of West Ham, head coach Julen Lopetegui insists he has no intention of sitting down and studying the table soon.

"I didn't look at the table - not yesterday, not today, not tomorrow," he said.

"The board is important in the last game, the important thing is to put the energy in to help the players improve and win every game.

"We fought a lot for these three points. The second half was very difficult for us to keep up the pace, we are happy for today but it's only three points, it will be a journey difficult and long.

"Today I think we deserved it, the character of the players - we celebrate for two hours and then we think about playing against Liverpool (in an FA Cup replay)."
