A political earthquake has hit Delta State as the ruling People's Democratic Party, PDP, ruling wing, Delta Unity Group, DUG, today declared for the All Progressives Congress, APC, with a commitment to vote all party candidates in 2023 general elections.

The DUG is recognized as the strategic and "intellectual" arm of the Delta PDP. The group had previously coalesced around Olorogun David Edevbie, former Delta Governor, Chief James Ibori's choice for Governor of Delta State; a choice that was rejected by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, in favor of the controversial and unpopular Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori.

At a special declaration rally on Sunday January 22 at St George's College, Obinomba, thousands of DUG members wearing their signature red shirts and hats, led by its president, a three-time member of the House of representatives, Rt. Hon. Daniel Reyenieju; former house speakers, Chief Monday Igbuya and Rt Hon Olisa Imegwu, among others, have declared themselves officially for the APC.

Speaking, Rt Hon Reyenieju said that the DUG was founded and created to support the best candidate of the PDP, but when the best could not be presented, "we toured the state for a man who could do David Edevbie's modernization program and found that ability in Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, so galvanizing that discovery outside wouldn't make sense, so we decided to join the APC.

"We're going to show PDP pepper. We can't go on like this, we can't have a president who will sell all our assets, we can't have a vice president who will continue to borrow money without show nothing. All the money they borrowed and kept will turn into fertilizer on their farms."

Former Speaker of the House, Right Hon. Igbuya, recalled that when Governor Okowa came on board with him as President, "he complained that the debt burden incurred by former Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan was so heavy that he cut off all our rights that there was no money. Now the debt he incurred in eight years will be difficult to repay in a lifetime."

Also speaking, Chief Evans Iwurie, a prominent DUG leader and former Delta Assembly Member, said Governor Okowa, through his incompetence, has become an embarrassment to Delta State, Nigeria and the medical profession, assuring that with Senator Ovie Omo-Agege as governor, Delta State will regain its pride...
