Dior exhibits the art of India in Mumbai

MUMBAI, India — It was clear that Maria Grazia Chiuri, artistic director of Christian Dior's women's collections , launched a new dialogue with the brand's historic Pre-Fall 2023 show at the Gateway of India on Thursday evening.

This dialogue immediately resonated in Mumbai with the familiarity of what was shown on the track, in terms of color, technique, styles and silhouettes, all of which showed Chiuri's affection and appreciation for India.

This was also evident in the collaboration between Dior and Karishma Swali, who runs the Chanakya workshops and the Chanakya School of Craft in Mumbai, which brought Chiuri's love of embroidery and Indian craftsmanship to life.

The show - massive with 99 styles - was unique in that many styles were created in collaboration regarding the choice of color palette, patterns, mirror work, sequins and craftsmanship.

The models have also been carefully chosen, with 23 Indian models, 33 Indian models with international backgrounds and 43 international.

The choice of India for the parade was the latest in a series of major engagements by Dior, from the purchase of the facade of Harrods in London during the last end-of-year celebrations to the pre-fall men's show that lit up the pyramids of Giza last December.

"Choosing this destination is deeply connected to our history and shared passions," said Delphine Arnault, President and CEO of Christian Dior Couture. "Our unfailing affinity with India, woven from the beginnings of the house in 1947, and through the shows of the various successors of Monsieur Dior - from Marc Bohan to Maria Grazia Chiuri - has constantly been deployed in numerous creative dialogues combining innovation and ancestral heritage. ”
