Discovering that you can still find glorious seclusion on the famous Greek island of Rhodes

The Less Crowded Rhodes: You Can Still Find Glorious Seclusion On This Famous Ancient Greek Island Roderick Gilchrist Checks Into The All-Inclusive Amada Colossos Resort He Walks Through The Empty Center Of Rhodes, Where Wild Deer Run Free In The Forests LEARN MORE: The best beaches in the world for 2023 nominated by Tripadvisor

Last time I saw Ladiko Beach was at my local Odeon. Actor Anthony Quinn led a group of British commandos across the waves of this scenic pine cove to knock out Nazi cannons in the Hollywood blockbuster, The Guns Of Navarone.

Quinn fell so in love with the beauty of this Greek island cove on the east coast of Rhodes that he negotiated to buy it and keep us out. But, as they say, beware of Greeks giving gifts. The Fathers of Rhodes went back on the agreement.

So today, fortunately, we can all swim in the translucent waters protected by high cliffs where purple bougainvilleas lie down the hill on fire. Ladiko is a bewitching haven. I snorkeled in the Indigo Sea, diving straight from a pontoon into the deep waters. Happiness.

At one time, Rhodes was a privileged stopover for the Beautiful People. Jackie and Ari Onassis have always anchored on their yacht Christina O in the port of Mandraki to explore the tangle of medieval streets of the old Byzantine city.

Today cruise ships transfer passengers to souvenir shops selling cheap leather bags.
