The National Center for Women's Development, a parastatal corporation under the Federal Ministry of Women's Affairs, has donated more than 1,000 brand new laptops to Nigerian trainees in the country's six geopolitical zones, its chief executive has announced , Dr. Asabe Bashir, said.

According to her, the donation was one of the main targets of Social Development Goal 5, on the use of ICTs to promote the empowerment of women in the country.

A statement from the Head (Press and Public Relations Unit) of NCWD, Ibrahim Nassir, said Bashir declared them in Abuja on Friday, where 90 participants comprising 45 persons with disabilities exposed to ICT assistive technologies and 45 female technicians in ICT and Mechatronics graduated in a grand ceremony.

“Over 10,000 Nigerian women have been trained in various ICT courses between 2018 and present,” she said.

Bashir emphasized that the training aims to expose the participants to various applications, tools and techniques of information and communication technologies that have a significant impact on their lives, allowing them to improve their social, cultural, political and economic and to become self-sufficient. dependent.

The NCWD CEO reiterated its commitment to the implementation action plan adopted by the World Summit on the Information Society, including two critical areas for people with disabilities, namely access to information, knowledge and capacity building.

"Each year, we continue to train and empower people with disabilities and foster the effective use of ICTs that are accessible, adaptive and affordable," she emphasized.

Acknowledging the driving force of information and communication technologies, she said that ICT remained the main gadget for all progressive knowledge-based and skills-oriented development activities and initiatives in all spheres of human activity.

She said that ICT remained the catalyst for change in working conditions, information processing and exchange, teaching methods, learning approaches, scientific research and access to information.

Bashir commended the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (Retired) for his inclusive initiative to ensure that no one is left behind in the order of things and his desire to ensure that women benefit from ICT to improve their well-being. be.

She assured participants that under her leadership, the NCWD would continue to encourage young people and women, who constitute more than 70% of the country's population, to harness the mighty powers of ICTs to enable them to substantially participate in and benefit from the information revolution across the country.

Bashir charged the participants to put what they learned into practice and share it with other women in their community and assured them of his continued support and follow-up.

Providing an overview of the programme, Head of ICT Department Morrison Udobong said technology plays a role in all kinds of careers from art to history and law, making skills accessible to women/girls to define them. for economic independence.

He said the ICT sector needed more girls and women because the jobs of the future would be driven by technology and innovation.

“It is expected that 65% of children entering primary school today will be employed. Girls want to learn, they are stepping up to acquire technical skills. /women through programs like this bridges the digital divide and gives the country the opportunity to fully utilize the potential of girls, women and youth,” he said.
