Prophet Ekiti remanded in custody for rape

An Ado Ekiti Magistrate's Court has dismissed a 45-year-old prophet, Adeleye Akingbaso, for allegedly raping a teenage girl in Ekiti State.

According to the prosecution, Mr. Akingbaso allegedly committed the offense of raping a 13-year-old girl in the Ajowa neighborhood of Ado Ekiti on July 25.

In his decision on Wednesday, the Chief Magistrate, Olu Bamidele, ordered that the suspect be remanded to the Correctional Center pending the issuance of a legal opinion by the Director of Public Prosecutions.

A victim impact statement she gave to the police has been filed in court.

"The Prophet is my mother's friend, he slept in our house. That day, my mother left for the night service, but the Prophet slept in our house", she said .

“At midnight he woke me up and said I wet the bed, I said no.

"He gave me shea butter and salt to rub my private part, I did as he asked me. When I woke up on the second day, I saw him at next to me and found out that I had been raped. He warned me not to tell anyone or I would go crazy.

"He came back on the third day, he said, he wanted to renew what he had given me earlier by sleeping with me. I ran out of the house and informed our neighbours.

“They called my mother and told her what had happened to him. He was arrested and handed over to the police.”

Requesting the referral order, Police Prosecutor Bamigbade Olumide explained that granting the order will allow the police to complete their investigations and forward the duplicate file to the office of the Director of Prosecutions public for legal advice.

The case has been adjourned to September 29 for a hearing.

This case is part of a long list of rapes of minors in Ekiti State.

The development caught the attention of the state government which had adopted the naming and shaming of those convicted of rape in an effort to deter crime.

Commissioner for Justice, Wale Fapohunda, previously lamented the increase in the number of cases despite the strict measures taken by the state.
